4th Regional Cybersecurity Conference: Building Defenders Across All Ages
On October 3, 2025, the 4th Regional Cybersecurity Conference was held at Holy Angel University (HAU) in Angeles City, Pampanga. Organized by the School of Computing, the event gathered industry professionals, students, educators, and public sector representatives to discuss the evolving landscape of digital security. With the theme “Cyber Secure Gens: Bridging Knowledge, Building Defenders Across All Ages,” the conference focused on the shared responsibility of protecting the digital world through awareness, collaboration, and education.
A Day of Insights and Real-World Learning
The event opened with a message from Mr. Leopoldo Jaime N. Valdes, HAU’s OIC President, who highlighted that cybersecurity is not only a technical matter but also a civic responsibility that transcends generations. Throughout the day, participants learned from distinguished speakers such as Usec. Renato Paraiso of the CICC, AJ Dumanhug of Secuna, Omar Palaming, Mark Legeza, Rodel Plasabas, Nap Castillo, and BGen. Jamel P. Samonte.
The conference covered a range of topics, including data privacy, cloud security, behavioral awareness, and national cyber resilience. One of the most memorable moments was the live phone hacking demonstration, which showed how vulnerable personal devices can be when users neglect basic security measures. This engaging and eye-opening activity underscored the importance of cybersecurity as part of everyday life.
Empowering Future Defenders
Beyond technical knowledge, the event emphasized the human side of cybersecurity. The concept of “human firewalls” stood out as a reminder that individuals play an active role in preventing cyberattacks. Students were encouraged to adopt responsible online behaviors, practice good digital hygiene, and advocate for a safer online community.
The Capture-the-Flag (CTF) competition also added excitement and challenge to the event, allowing student teams to apply their problem-solving skills in simulated cyberattack scenarios. It was both an educational and inspiring experience that showcased how collaboration and critical thinking are essential in cybersecurity defense.
A Call for Digital Awareness and Cultural Appreciation
The 4th Regional Cybersecurity Conference was not just about learning the latest trends in technology—it was also about fostering a mindset of awareness, responsibility, and appreciation for cybersecurity as part of Filipino digital culture. Future conferences could include a session that helps Filipino citizens better recognize the value of cybersecurity in shaping a safer and more resilient nation.
The event concluded with a shared understanding that building cyber defenders begins with education and awareness. By learning, collaborating, and taking responsibility, we can all contribute to a more secure digital future for generations to come.
